"Stainless Steel Sculpture Study" 1984
As a Contemporary Artist I always begin my Abstract Contemporary Sculpture with drawings and models. This is a example of a model for a Monumental Outdoor Sculpture which is split from a Rectangle, opened up and reconfigured with no waste of material. It may seem to have the qualities of a Monumental Sculpture yet is only 8 inches high. This is a good check to if your ideas hold up on a Monumental Scale rather than just going from a drawing to the actual Abstract Modern Sculpture. When a model seems monumental at 8 inches high it has a scale which will be Monumental at any size. Contemporary Modern Sculpture studies are a excellent way to fine tune your proportions and make adjustments before actually building any Metal Sculpture in a full scale saving time, money and labor. Abstract Sculpture is a highly creative format, having endless possibilities as Outdoor Sculpture. I have always been extremely disciplined in following a metamorphic Vocabulary of shapes in my Modern Contemporary Sculpture which seem to produce seemingly endless possibilities, like words in a language. Contemporary Sculpture has traveled many avenues in the 21st Century when Styles seemed Modern in their time frame. Today Abstract Sculpture can run the Gamete from Figurative to Minimal, to Abstract. There is really no definitive style fot the Modern Artist to follow in this time in Art History. So many styles are being explored now that they all are valid at this point in the history of Modern Sculpture. Pushing the envelope in all directions is perfectly valid, today anything goes in the world of the Modern Artist. Outdoor Sculpture has always attracted me. I like the fact that it is not locked up somewhere. Being outdoors as Public Art brings art to people rather than the people having to go to a Museum or Gallery. I see this Sculpture Study above as a excellent candidate for Stainless Steel. It works like a environment and can be viewed from the inside or outside much like architecture in non functionalway. This Sculpture if built should be in at least 10 feet high to allow the viewer to enter into its portals and experience it from both the inside and out. Its a perfect example how Modern Abstract Sculpture can even work in the context of Non Functional Architecture. Perhaps the massive Monumental Scale this Modern Sculpture is why it remains a model and has never been built. It would require a Public Art Commission to realize due to the tremendous weight, space requirements and high cost of Stainless Steel, especially on this Monumental Scale.
